FST Bexley, based in Welling in the London Borough of Bexley, was set up in 1997. FST is a “not for profit” organisation established in 1994 to develop work experience and employment opportunities for people with enduring mental health problems, alcohol and drug misuse and other disadvatages, through voluntary work Using a unique model, founded on three basic principles.
• That FST provides real work
• That people join the workforce as colleagues and equals bringing a range of life skills and experiences with them.
• That people are assisted to move on into employment and vocational training.
With a workforce of 40+ we have built a substantial customer base for gardening work, painting and decorating, house clearances, rubbish clearances and contract cleaning.
FST Bexley is set up as a small business providing mainly painting and decorating, minor building works, gardening. Our Employment Development officer provides a Job Club to help members improve their job prospects and also provide placements with employers so they can get work experience. Locations range from local areas to just outside London.
The office itself is in School Lane just off the main Welling High street.
Each day the crew don their overalls and take to the road sometimes returning to the office knee deep in mud but there is a tremendous amount of self-gratification gained on the jobs undertaken. The team work hard and fast to maintain deadlines on the job.
We are hoping that all this and much, much more will serve to boost the project’s income for what seems to be a bright and successful future for First Step Bexley.
In the May of 2007 we invested in a new van for the project.
Our customers come from all parts of the community, with much of our new work coming as a result of recommendation by our satisfied customers. We have developed particular skills in building works, painting and decorating, gardening work and office based skills.
A regular contract involves cleaning and gardening for Hyde Housing Association one day a week, Painting and Decorating for Broomleigh Housing Association.
We also provide a service to ten regular private customers such as gardening Painting and Decorating. We have been very pleased with the compliments Hyde Housing and other customers have given us for this work and several new contracts have resulted directly from recommendations from Hyde Housing.
Our Managers Warren Cox, and Dave Millner are dedicated and valued members of the workforce and indeed all of our manual work and office employees work very hard on all the projects. our employment development officer works very hard to ensure employees gain enough skills to enable them to move onto paid employment.
There is no shortage of work available and the positive marketing of FST Bexley offers the potential for the project to grow. We have been pleased to see a number of our workforce move on to full-time paid mployment.
