No 1 Award Goes to Enfield!
At the recent FST awards night, Enfield Project walked off with the largest haul of silverware, including the top prize of 'Project of the Year'.
First Step Trust's Annual General Meeting was the occasion for the newly created Positive Action Awards presentation night, where projects and individuals were recognised for their achievements during the year.
In addition to the overall winners award, the project also had Duane Green selected as 'Achiever of the Year' and Jeff Richards chosen as runner-up in the 'Manager of the Year' category.
Karen Barnes, Steven Wagner and Brian Meakins were also awarded certificates for their nomination in further categories.
The awards were judged by a committee comprised of workforce and management of the Trust and presented to the winners at the awards ceremony in Woolwich in January, attended by over 100 people from FST projects throughout the country.
Project manager Brian Meakins said:
'We are absolutely delighted to have won the 'Project of the Year' category in First Step Trust's achievement awards. We are one of the newest projects and it can truly be said, therefore, that everyone involved in the project's development has contributed to this success. We have achieved some truly outstanding results this year, not least in the scale and professionalism of our external works, although the support received from the office team has been invaluable in the management of the project, particularly as we have been without an office manager for the greater part of the year. We are aware that an enormous amount of good work has gone on in many of our sister projects (which makes the award even better) but we do feel that this has been a 'special' year for us and we are thrilled with this recognition by our peers and the senior management of the Trust.'
The individual award winner, Duane Green, added, through the widest grin of the night,
'This has been one of the best nights I can remember for a long time. I am just so pleased with my award. I've never won anything in my life before except a jar of coffee in a raffle and my 10metre swimming certificate when I was 8 years old'. He's 45 now!

About the Enfield Project
First Step Trust opened a new project in the London Borough of Enfield in August 2004, with the appointment of Brian Meakins as Project Manager. The project enjoys the support and sponsorship of a variety of bodies but in particular recognizes our partnership with the National Lotteries through their ‘Big Lottery’ Fund; Barnet, Enfield & Haringey MH NHS Trust and the London Borough of Enfield's Neighborhood Renewal team.
We have recently moved into our own premises at:
187 Angel Place, Fore Street, Edmonton, N18 2UD
These offices are situated right on the main road through the borough and although they are part of a grand Georgian Terrace, they are very much 'state of the art' with the additional benefits of a conservatory extension into a very pleasant and secluded garden – a truly excellent working environment and location.

Our focus is broadly similar to many of the existing FST projects in so much as we provide a variety of work experiences for people with mental health issues in the Enfield area. This experience takes the form of working as part of a volunteer workforce which undertakes real work for real customers and is run as a real business. People can attend part-time or full time.
Our business hours are 9.30am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and our work typically takes the form of contracts for gardening, painting, decorating, small building projects and light removals which provides a variety of physical activity and responsibility. These external work activities are supported by a fully equipped office team responsible for a wide range of computer, accounting and clerical duties.
We are a fairly new project, with a current workforce of 32 and growing. We have a great team ethos and high levels of attendance which creates a genuine working environment and we have attained some remarkable successes in work achievements given the duration of our project to date. There are plenty of opportunities to learn a range of work, life & social skills.
