First Step Trust’s Haringey project has been established since April 2004. Based in Tottenham and working in partnership with teaching Primary Care Trust, NHS, College Link, Employment Link, College of North East London (CONEL), Reed in Partnership, Job Centre Plus and Surestart on a project called “Employment Improves your Mental Health” which is being funded by the London Development Agency.
The Project Manager is Peter Ives, Assistant Manager is Spencer Gray and Tessa
Strike is the Employment Development Worker (EDW) for the project which is
based at unit 15, N17 Studios, 784 High Road, Tottenham, N17 0DA.
Our workforce totals 30 and they are involved in Office work, including setting
up and maintaining a database listing all Mental Health services in the Borough
as well as external work such as Gardening and Painting and Decorating. We
are working hard to build up a customer base and we have also applied for Approved
Contractor status with Haringey Council.
The focus of this project is to provide Learning opportunities for people
with Mental Health problems prior to work placements and ultimately finding
jobs for those who are ready.
The Learning opportunities are one or more of the following:
Basic IT skills, IT Data entry, Advance IT – Database, Desktop publishing:
Finance- Petty cash, cash book etc: Gardening, Decorating, Removals, Health & Safety,
Catering and Work placements.
Links with local employers will include Teaching, PCT, NHS, Retail outlets,
voluntary organisations, practical work operations, Police, Law Courts and
catering establishments.
