About the project
First Step Trust (FST) Lambeth operates a garage, a training centre and meeting room hire business providing a range of services to the people and businesses of South London.
Car Servicing and Repairs
Our garage service centre, SMaRT Garage Services, provides a service centre with a strong customer-base drawn from the local community. The business operates as a social enterprise delivering a high quality service at competitive prices whilst providing the long-term unemployed and others disadvantaged within the job market, with an opportunity to develop skills in the automotive trade, customer services and office administration.
Work experience
FST Lambeth provides experience in the following sectors:
- Painting and decorating.
- Gardening and grounds maintenance.
- Facilities maintenance and cleaning.
- Catering.
- Office administration / clerical work.
Training Centre
The training centre, SMaRT Futures, offers a range of short vocational courses which are delivered at the West Norwood training centre. Alternatively we can offer training at a time and place to suit your organisation's needs. All training programmes are accredited to national standards and we currently have courses available in the following subjects:
• Health and Safety
• Food Hygiene
• Business Administration
• Retail Skills
Meeting Place

SMaRT Venue is FST's meeting room available for hire. It is an elegant room comfortably accommodating 12 persons in boardroom style or up to 25 theatre style. It is an ideal room for meetings and training sessions with good natural lighting and state-of-the art audiovisual equipment including:
• High speed wireless internet access
• Laptop, projector and screen
• Flipchart and marker pens
• Writing materials.
Work related skills and qualifications
Our work placements provide on-the job training. Each workforce member has a personal development plan which tracks their progress towards becoming ready to move on to paid employment, alternative voluntary work or further education. FST offers workforce members the opportunity to acquire the following work-related skills;
General
? The basic skills required by employers such timekeeping, ability to work in a team and a positive attitude towards work.
Skills specific to the automotive trade
• Car servicing
• Assisting with repairs of vehicles (brakes/clutches/engine diagnostics/engine repairs)
• General maintenance/cleaning of garage
• Car valeting.
Office administration
• All aspects of office administration including computer skills, data inputting, following office procedures etc.
• Financial administration such as working with invoices, petty cash, processing cheques, paying suppliers, ordering supplies etc.
• Delivering training where and when applicable.
Customer service
• Understanding the need to deliver high-quality service, dealing with customers, promoting business services.
Employment development
• Interviewing techniques, CV development and job search assistance.
Qualifications available
FSt, in partnership with the national examination body OCR, is approved to offer a range of nationally recognised vocational qualifications. These include courses ranging from Level 1 Awards through to Level 3 Diplomas.
Currently, FST is taking referrals for the following Level 1 and 2 qualifications.

The nearest train station is West Norwood overland and is a short 5 minute walk away. Buses numbered 432, 2, 196, 315,192, 468, 68, 689, 690 run close to the building. There is also limited on street car parking available
