On Friday, 1st December, two members of the FST Lambeth
workforce received awards from Jobcentre Plus. Leon Chambers
received an award for success in his external work placement at ASDA.
Edward Darkoh received an award for his success in obtaining paid employment at a Mencap residential home in Camberwell. Both of these workers had been referred by First Step Trust (Lambeth) to Mencap Pathway for job preparation and job search. The partnership between FST and Pathway has enabled 8 workers from Lambeth into open employment over the past year.

They both received their arards from from David Benwell, JCP's external
partnerships manager and Sue Harry, JCP's Communications manager.

Edward Darkoh receiving his award. Edward signed to Mencap's work Preparation programme and NDDP, received an award and a WH Smith voucher for £15 for achieving success at his new paid job at Mencap residential home in Camberwell.

Leon Chambers receiving his award. Leon signed to Mencap's JCP Work Preparation Programme and New Deal For Disabled People provision (Nddp),received an award from JCP and a WH Smith voucher for £15 for achieving success at his placement at Asda at Clapham Junction.

About FST Lambeth

Situated in the heart of the London Borough of Lambeth, this project has been providing high quality goods and services to local residents for the last ten years. The project represents the multi-cultural cross section of the community within Lambeth Borough and we offer work opportunities in gardening, furniture restoration, printing, cleaning, shredding, removals and administration.

Like all FST projects, we are out and about in the community doing a fair days work at competitive rates.

The project is funded by South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and developed by First Step Trust.

This project is the recipient of an NHS equality award.

This project was amongst a number of services that were part of a Beacon status award for the community services in Lambeth. Beacon status is a national initiative aimed at promoting and sharing examples of good practice across the UK.

The Activities and services include:

Painting and decorating
Gardening – maintenance and landscaping
Furniture restoration
Minor works
Removals
Administration, finances and clerical work

We currently have some major contracts providing gardening services to NHS trusts in South London as well as doing work for private customers.

Successful jobs that we have undertaken include:

Restoration of frames for a major art collection
Furniture restoration for the antiques trade in Bermondsey
Design of Christmas cards for Unity Trust Bank
Laying a large Yorkshire patio in a listed building
