About FST Salford
FST Salford is one of two projects set up in the summer of 2002 in Medium Secure Units in the North West of England. A medium secure unit is a secure hospital environment for patients with mental health problems who are not yet ready to be discharged into the community. Many but not all patients are sent here for assessment and treatment by the courts.
The Salford project is based within the Edenfield centre of Prestwich Hospital. It provides work-based opportunities for patients to rediscover old skills, learn new skills, develop the routines and disciplines of attending work on a regular basis and take responsibility for the work they do. Patients being discharged into the community will be able to take with them a formal Reference to support them in the search for employment.
The project is now quite stable and operating regular work in the fields of desktop publishing car valeting, catering, office administration and contract cleaning. Its most recent success has been the launch of a car valeting service for the staff & visitors to the Edenfield centre.
Another field of activity has been office based using computers and up-to-date software where workforce members have written, edited and published an information booklet designed for patients new to the Edenfield centre.
The desk top publishing work section has developed into a very active part of the project which undertakes publishing information leaflets, newsletters and promotional material for the Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Trust and other external clients.
To support the work carried out by the workforce the projects gives the opportunity to obtain industry standard qualifications in Health & Safety At work and NVQ level 2 in business administration.
The project operates a snack bar in the evening at the unit to provide facilities for patients visitors and staff to obtain food where no such facility currently exists a number of workforce members have obtained qualifications in food hygiene.
Most of the work undertaken will be for the local NHS Trust and confined to the Edenfield Centre by virtue of it being a medium secure unit. However there are plans to expand outside of the unit with workforce members who have the necessary permission to leave the unit. Patients involved to date have been enthusiastic and committed. Their comments include “The project provides patients with the opportunity to enhance their quality of life in hospital”, “Gives a goal for patients to work to and provides job-satisfaction and a sense of achievement”. “There is camaraderie in working as a team” and “I feel I have made progress”.
